LI BINYUAN 厲檳源
Li Binyuan is among the most striking artists to emerge from China in the past two decades – a sculptor by training whose practice has redefined the relationship between the body, material, and physical force. He is world-renowned for high-impact performances – such as scaling waterfalls and hurling himself into landscapes – that test the limits of the body against the indifference of the physical world.
Li Binyuan has translated this investigation of force and material into a new dimension, developing sculptural works at Ten X. The collision between the body and resistant material, a hallmark of his career, finds a different kind of permanence in stone. His life-sized white Carrara Marble sculpture, You are Okay, 2023, captures a moment of public vulnerability witnessed by millions yet universally understood; experience of falling and the quiet human reflex to reassure. This work extends Li Binyuan’s lifelong preoccupation with the body in crisis — no longer his own, but rendered with the same empathy and unflinching precision that has defined his practice from the start.

The Long Farewell was conceived during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic – a period of profound personal and collective upheaval. Named after Raymond Chandler’s celebrated novel, the work confronts the inevitability of letting go: of cherished relationships, of certainties, of the world as it was. As in his action performances and video works, the artist turns to sculpture to give form to states of being that resist easy articulation. A group of life-sized figures and companion forms carved in white Carrara marble, The Long Farewell, renders vulnerability, companionship, and solitary wonder with a clarity and dignity that stand against the chaos from which it emerged.
